Haymarket Medical Center

Haymarket Medical Center is a 38,000 sf medical office building providing primary care services in addition to behavioral health, obstetrics, radiology, laboratory, and pharmacy services in historic Haymarket, Virginia.

While the town of Haymarket provides a traditional context, Kaiser Permanente’s national brand requires a modern, unique visitor experience. The building needed to be crafted as an elegant and simple form with contemporary aesthetics, but also serve as a “good neighbor” to its historic context.

The design team was tasked to work within the constraints of a pad-ready site and an established building perimeter. Design of the envelope accommodates the less-than-ideal North-South pad orientation (which poses environmental challenges of glare and solar heat gain from low-angled sun) with careful placement of interior spaces, glazing, and solar shading.

The most important planning goal for the project was to create a clear, simple, and efficient diagram which enhances member experience by maximizing daylight and views. A communicating stair between waiting areas promotes physical activity. On-stage and Off-stage areas separate the patient circulation from the staff’s, providing a quiet, calming experience.
